1970s Rebellious Youth Captured By High School Teacher

Photographer Joseph Szabo first was a teacher at Malverne High School in Long Island, where he taught photography from 1972-1999. He has been photographing his teenage students for the past twenty-five years. During his first days at the job he figured that he’s gonna need something interesting to catch the attention of his rebellious students. So he brought a camera into class and made a series of intimate portraits which show how teenagers used to live and spend their time together back in 1970s.
“I never had any agenda with my photography – it was never a money-making thing, it was just about connecting with young people – and so I think my photographs have a sort of authentic or genuine quality that a lot of people seem able to relate to.” Joseph said in an interview for Huck Magazine.
